Dr. Dan Tinianow is a Professor and the Program Chair of Oral and Interpersonal Communication in the School of General Studies at the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC). He holds a PhD in Mass Communication and a Master of Science in Television/Radio/Film from the Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University, where he was a University Fellow. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with minors in Psychology and Studio Art from Oberlin College, graduating with honors.

Over the past few decades, Dr. Tinianow has taught at numerous colleges, including Syracuse University, Austin College, La Sierra University, Donghua University in Shanghai, China, and Capital University. He worked full-time in the entertainment industry from 2001 to 2003 and has engaged in project work from time to time. Regarding his teaching at UAGC, he says: “Guiding students to discover their passion in life is the most rewarding part of teaching for me. I welcome the opportunity to move into large-scale online instruction at UAGC, as it will clearly play a growing role in the future. Learning is a lifelong process, and educators must always be open to the experience of learning from their students. In the education field in general, keeping up with changes in regulation and technology is vital.”

Accomplishments:

Dr. Tinianow is a past recipient of a Philo T. Farnsworth Award for the best educational television program in a five-state region. He also won the Stephen H. Coltrin Award for Excellence in Media Education, awarded competitively by the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS), and recently received the Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association.

He has presented at conferences such as the International Communication Association (ICA), TechEd, Computer Use in Education (CUE), The Teaching and Learning Conference (TLC), the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), the Association for Distance Education and Independent Learning (ADEIL), and Colorado Learning and Teaching with Technology (COLTT).

Dr. Tinianow’s publications include a chapter in Religion, Law and Freedom from Praeger Press, an introductory communication textbook titled Messages in Context, and an introductory public speaking text, New Traditions in Public Speaking, the second edition of which won the Textbook Excellence Award in 2024.
